Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 21246

This specimen was lot 21246 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Pesos, 1893-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-61 Prooflike. Already quite a RARE example given its paltry mintage figure, this dazzling Mint State specimen presents a tremendous degree of radiant brilliance in the fields and supreme frosting of the devices. As such, the prooflike designation is most appropriate, and should allow this example to undoubtedly soar exceptionally high." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Mexico City mint 1870-1905. Mexico City is generally considered a common mint but this is a rare date. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.
