The first specimen was lot 22331 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2-1/2 Pesos 1893 Cn-M, AU. Full mint brilliance, with a sharp strike and light hairlines on the reflective surfaces. The only issue of this denomination for the Culiacan mint, with a tiny mintage of only 141 pieces. One of the many very rare issues of the 2-1/2 Peso series." The second specimen was lot 40348 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $26,840. The catalog description[2] noted, "Extremely Rare One Year Mint from Culiacan, MEXICO. 2-1/2 Pesos, 1893-Cn M. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-63. Extremely rare one year mint. Finest of just four examples graded by NGC. This coin is a mystery of Mexican Republic numismatists. It was minted in the far Western Mint of Culiacan a year after the series was stopped in Mexico City. This was the first time Culiacan had minted this denomination. Extremely rare and seldom offered, we show no public offerings of this coin in over 10 years. This is a rare opportunity to acquire this elusive coin. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." The type is recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.

Recorded mintage: 141.

Specification: 4.23 g, 0.875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-151; KM-411.1.
