This type was struck 1773-88 at Mexico City. This subtype (struck 1773-85) was 0.901 fine gold; issues of 1786-88 were only 0.875 fine. This specimen was lot 122 in Sedwick sale 9 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, bust 8 escudos, Charles III, 1783FF, ex: Eliasberg collection. inward-facing initials. Beautifully lustrous AU with hint of toning, well-struck and problem-free except for minor surface hairlines (in fact, we surmise that NGC would say 'AU details, surface hairlines' now, whereas in Eliasberg they put "EF-45"), a very attractive coin in any case, somewhat scarcer than its South American counterparts. Pedigreed to the Eliasberg collection (lot 3164)."
