This specimen was lot 30717 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Escudo, 1783/2-FF. Charles III (1759-88). NGC VF-25." Shown is a 1783MoFF escudo, of a type struck in Mexico 1772-1788. The escudos of Charles III come in three types: KM 116, struck 1760-61, KM 117, struck 1762-71 and KM 118, struck 1772-88. KM 118 is further divided into three subtypes; KM 118.1, with inverted assayers' initials, struck 1772-73 only; KM 118.2 (this type), struck 1773-84; and KM 118.2a, struck 1785-88 with fineness reduced to 875 thousandths.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.
