This specimen was lot 4293 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "Peru. Escudo, 1783-MI (Lima). Charles III. Bust right. Reverse: Crowned arms. Hint of luster. NGC graded EF-45." The gold coinage of Latin America, originally 0.917 fine, was reduced to 0.901 fine in 1772 and then to 0.875 fine in 1785. While eight escudos from Peru are reasonably available albeit expensive, the smaller gold denominations are all very scarce. The SCWC prices this type very low, but specialists know better.
