This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type issued 1772-89. This specimen was lot 3489 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,910. The catalog description[1] noted, "1783 MI 8 escudos. Lima mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Bright yellow gold with subtle toning and strong lustre, a lovely Mint State coin with only trivial signs of handling. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." Later issues of this type (1785-89) were struck in gold lowered to 0.875 fine.
