Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 1102

This specimen was lot 1102 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $8,330. The catalog description[1] noted, "Madrid, Spain, bust gold 8 escudos, Charles III, 1783JD, NGC MS 63, finest known in NGC census. Very bold strike with strong luster, light hairlines in obverse fields, die-chip flaw on wreath on reverse, but overall a very choice example, in fact the finest known by four grades at NGC." This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-282, CT-62; KM-409.1, Cayón-12946.
