This specimen was lot 12169 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1783-PSF. NGC AU-58. Charles III (1759-88)." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
