This specimen was lot 31066 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1784-NR JJ. Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Charles III. PCGS AU-55. An olive-yellow example with a good deal of lustrous brilliance remaining and a good deal of detail as well. For the collector looking to acquire a wholesome overall representative, this specimen undoubtedly checks all of the boxes. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
