Spain 1784-M JD 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 619 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 16,000 € (about US$24,171 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,
"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1784. Madrid. JD. 8 escudos. La onza más rara de esta ceca y reinado. Parte de brillo original. MBC+/EBC-. (Eight escudos of 1784, Madrid mint. The rarest onza of this reign and mint, some original luster, extremely fine.)"
This Spanish equivalent of the doubloon was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-84. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Spanish eight escudos are very rare. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1729.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
