This specimen was lot 23648 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,703.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1785-SF Popayán, AU55 NGC, a choice coin with flashy prooflike mint luster and instant eye appeal." This type was struck 1772-89 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine.
