Aureo sale 232, lot 220

The specimen shown was lot 220 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 950 euros (about US$1,567 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1782. México. FF. 8 escudos. Ceca y ensayador invertidos. Rayitas. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. EBC-. (Eight escudos of 1782, Mexico City mint, inverted mintmark and assayer. Tiny scratches, parts of the original luster, nearly extremely fine.)

This type was issued at Mexico in 1773-85 and is the first eight escudos of Mexico not stratospherically priced; assayer FF is listed for 1778-84.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
