This specimen was lot 4188 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "Mexico. 8 Escudos, 1779-Mo FF. Charles III. Older standard bust to right. Reverse: Large crowned Hapsburg arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, initials and mint mark inverted. Hint of original mint luster. NGC graded AU-53." This type was issued at Mexico in 1773-85 and is the first eight escudos of Mexico not stratospherically priced; assayer FF is listed for 1778-84.
