This specimen was lot 3161 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2300. The catalog description[1] noted, "1779 FF 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-50 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with generous amounts of mint lustre in protected areas, trace of old ink museum number now faded in right obverse field. Good eye appeal. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel, April 1945."
This type was struck 1773-89 and is among the more available of Mexican colonial four escudos but, like the smaller two escudos, remains scarce. Assayer FF is noted for the years 1778-84.
