Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features the George Cross, awarded to the island for heroism during World War Two. This type was struck 1972, 1976-82. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.

Recorded mintage: 2,793,000 plus 6,884 proofs.

Specification: 7.15 g, bronze, 25.9 mm diameter.
