Malta 1976 5 cents

Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features an altar at the temple of Hagar Qim, a five thousand year old megalith on the island. This type was struck 1972, 1976-81. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.

Recorded mintage: 1,009,000 plus 2,500 proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel, 23.6 mm diameter (same module as a British shilling).
