Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a Maltese cross, the badge of the Order of the Knights of Malta, which ruled the island for three centuries. This type was struck 1982 only and likely never circulated. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
