Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a bee and honeycomb. This type was struck 1982 only and likely never circulated. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.

Recorded mintage: 850 plus 1,793 proofs.

Specification: 1.45 g, aluminum, 23.25 mm diameter.
