Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features a bust of Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons. This type was struck 1976-81 by the Franklin Mint, superseding a brass coin with the same design. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
