Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. The obverse features gondola. This type was struck 1972 only. The subsequent type (KM 29b) of 1976-81 was struck in copper-nickel. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 4,750,000 plus 6,000 proofs struck in bronze.
Specification: 10.55 g, brass, 30 mm diameter.
