This specimen was lot 34307 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Malta: Republic gold 50 Pounds 1974 MS66 PCGS." Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage did not commence until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45.
