This specimen was lot 34647 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Malta: Republic gold 50 Pounds 1975 MS68 NGC. A resplendent gem with a hefty eye appeal and near prooflike features." Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. The SCWC lists this type with two obverses; the gondola shown here and the state arms on KM 38.
