Malta 1977 100 pounds
This specimen was lot 2102 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €2,700 (about US$3,119 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MALTE, République (1974-), AV 100 livres, 1977. Les Gavroches. Titre 0,917. (republic of Malta, gold 100 pounds of 1977. about Uncirculated.)"
Numista states that this NCLT was struck in Malta at the mint there, which was open 1973-95. Wikipedia comments, "Les Gavroches is a bronze sculpture by Antonio Sciortino, depicting Parisian street children inspired by Gavroche from the 1862 Victor Hugo novel Les Misérables. The statue was cast in 1904, and for most of the 20th century it was displayed at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, Malta." In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
