Malta was granted independence by Great Britain in 1964. Coinage was not inaugurated until 1972, when the republic was inaugurated. This type was struck 1972, 1976-81 altho only the 1972 was struck for circulation. The obverse features the Great Seige Monument, when the island withstood Turkish attack in 1565. In 1982, one Maltese pound = US$2.45. Malta has since joined the EU and adopted the euro, rendering the Maltese pound obsolete.
Recorded mintage: 5,500,000 plus 13,000 proofs.
Specification: 13.6 g, copper-nickel, 32.95 mm diameter.
