"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM FRANZ VON INGELHEIM, 1679-1695. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Reichstaler 1691, Mainz. Münzmeister Andreas Dittmar. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat// Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Ingelheim), dahinter Krumm-, Kreuzstab und Schwert gekreuzt. RR Kl. Zainende, leicht justiert, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 402, Frankfurt/Main 2010, Nr. 2738 und der Auktion Münzzentrum Rheinland 193, Solingen-Ohligs 2021, Nr. 2455. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, thaler of 1691, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in clerical robe; reverse: triple helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Ingelheim, behind it a crossed sword and crosier. Rare, clipped, lightly adjusted, very fine.)"
Anselm Francis of Ingelheim (1634-95) succeeded Charles Henry as archbishop of Mainz in 1679. Unlike many of his predecessors, he held no other office. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline. While gulden from this state are fairly common, the thalers are rare and expensive. The adjustment marks on the obverse and doubling on the reverse likely suppressed bidding on this lot.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28,85 g.
