Mainz 1691-AD 1/12 thaler
This specimen was lot 4758 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €130 (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. 1/12 Taler 1691, AD, Mainz. Äußerst selten. Sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, one twelfth thaler of 1691, Mainz mint. Very scarce, very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck at Erfurt and Mainz 1689-92. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline.
