Künker sale 404, lot 2432

This specimen was lot 2432 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €80 (about US$105 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF ANSELM FRANZ VON INGELHEIM, 1679-1695. Die Münzstätte Aschaffenburg. 2 Albus 1692, Aschaffenburg. Münzmeister Conrad Bethmann. Vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Ingelheim), oben Rosette, umher Lorbeerkranz//[drei Ringe übereinander] II [drei Ringe übereinander] / ALBUS / 1692 / C • B, oben Rosette, umher Lorbeerkranz. Seltenes Jahr. Vorzüglich. Erworben 2013 von Dirk Löbbers, Wettringen. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, double albus of 1692, Aschaffenburg mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Ingelheim, rosette above, wreath around; reverse: value, date and initials in wreath. Scarce date, extremely fine.)"

Anselm Francis of Ingelheim (1634-95) succeeded Charles Henry as archbishop of Mainz in 1679. Unlike many of his predecessors, he held no other office. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1681, 1690-91 and 1693 but not 1692. Two albus was four kreuzer or 2/45 of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1,73 g.
