Anselm Francis of Ingelheim (1634-95) succeeded Charles Henry as archbishop of Mainz in 1679. Unlike many of his predecessors, he held no other office. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline. This type was struck 1680-82, 1685-86, 1689-90. The "AF+EM" means "Anselm Franz, Erzbischof von Mainz". Gold presentation strikes dated 1680 exist of this type.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 0,55 g.
