Mainz 1689 2/3 thaler KM-194

This specimen was lot 311 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$627 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Mainz, Stadt 2/3 Taler 1689. Sehr schön. Korrodiert. Randfehler. Schrötlingsfehler. (Germany, city of Mainz, two-thirds thaler of 1689, very fine, Corroded, Edge flaw, Flan flaw.)"
This type was struck using looted silver while the city was under French occupation (see the article on KM 193 for the history). It comes with and without obverse legend (the latter shown here), both rare.
