(Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, half ducat of 1680, Erfurt mint, struck using threepence dies. Obverse: capped, quartered arms of Mainz and Ingelheim, sword and crozier crossed behind, palm branches around; reverse: imperial orb with value divides the date. Extremely rare, choice very fine.)"
Anselm Francis of Ingelheim (1634-95) succeeded Charles Henry as archbishop of Mainz in 1679. Unlike many of his predecessors, he held no other office. After the French invaded and wrecked his diocese in the 1690's, he moved to Aschaffenburg. This is an off-metal presentation strike of half ducat weight which the SCWC lists as a pattern. These presentation strikes were very popular in the Netherlands and appear occasionally in the German series. The regular type was struck 1680-82, 1685-86, 1689-90. The "AF+EM" means "Anselm Franz, Erzbischof von Mainz".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen gold, 1,71 g.
