Künker sale 386, lot 4753

This specimen was lot 4753 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. Reichstaler 1680, MF, Mainz. Äußerst selten. Schöne Patina, sehr schön +/fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Lagerliste der Fa. Ball Nachf. 32, 1936, Nr. 37602. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, thaler of 1680, Mainz mint. Very scarce, nice patina, very fine to about extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. The archbishops issued a variety of thalers in the seventeenth century but none are common. This is one of six for Anselm Francis and was struck again in 1682 and 1685. There is also a double thaler (Dav-5568).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.74 g.

Catalog reference: KM 181, Dav-5569; Slg. Walther 399; Dav-5569; Slg. Pick 526.
