Künker sale 386, lot 4874

This specimen was lot 4874 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$23,260 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-1678. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1676, Mainz. * DAMIAN · HARTARD : D : G : ARCHIEPVS : MOGVNTINVS : Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//S · R · I · P · GERM : ARCHICAN & PRIN : EL : EPS · WOR : 1676 MF (Matthias Fischer, Münzmeister in Mainz 1652-1682) Vierfach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Worms) mit Mittelschild von der Leyen, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Heinz Beaury. Exemplar der Slg. Virgil M. Brand, Teil 2, Auktion Leu 47, Zürich 1988, Nr. 1662. (archbishopric of Mainz, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-78, thaler of 1676, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robe; reverse: four helmeted, quartered arms of Mainz and Worms with escutcheon of Leyen, crozier and sword crossed behind. Extremely rare, attractive example with handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. The archbishops issued double thalers only sporadically in the seventeenth century and all are rare. This is the only one of Damian Hartard. There is also a single thaler (Dav-5562).
