Mainz 1674-MF thaler Dav-5560
This specimen was lot 2378 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$26,242 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF LOTHAR FRIEDRICH VON METTERNICH-BURSCHEID, 1673-1675. Prägungen Lothar Friedrichs als Erzbischof von Mainz, 1673-1675. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Reichstaler 1674, Mainz. Münzmeister Matthias Fischer. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat// Sechsfach behelmtes und verziertes, sechsfeldiges Wappen (Worms/Mainz/Speyer/ Weißenburg/Mainz/ Worms) mit Mittelschild von Metternich-Burscheid, dahinter Krumm-, Kreuzstab und Schwert gekreuzt. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Rudolph Walther, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 275, Frankfurt/Main 1971, Nr. 346 und der Slg. Lothar Friedrich von Metternich-Burscheid (1617-75) was the bishop of Speyer from 1652 to 1675 and succeeded Johann Philipp von Schönborn as archbishop of Mainz and bishop of Worms from 1673 to 1675. Pluralism was common in the seventeenth century. This thaler accompanied a double thaler (Dav-5559), both rare. Like many German princes, the archbishop was striking mostly gulden in the 1670's.
