Mainz 1677 6 pfennig
This specimen was lot 4749 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €280 (about US$362 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-1678. 6 Pfennig 1677, Erfurt. RR Sehr schön +. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Waldemar Wruck, Berlin. (archbishopric of Mainz, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-78, six pence of 1677, Erfurt mint. Very rare, choice very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This obscure denomination, a sechser, was struck only in 1676-77, of which this is the fourth and final issue. Four pfennige made a kreuzer, making this coin 1½ kreuzer or 1/60 thaler. St. Martin appears on the reverse, guarding the value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 1.25 g.
