Künker sale 404, lot 2401

This specimen was lot 2401 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,412 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF DAMIAN HARTARD VON DER LEYEN, 1675-1678. Ein Achteltaler auf den Tod des Erzbischofs Damian Hartard 1678. Die Münzstätte Mainz. 1/8 Reichstaler 1678, Mainz, auf seinen Tod. Ohne Signatur. Mit Kurhut bedecktes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Worms), dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt, zu den Seiten je ein Palmzweig//Acht Zeilen Schrift, darunter die Jahreszahl 1678. RR Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzhandlung, Herbert Grün 61, Heidelberg 2013, Nr. 2688. Erworben 2014 von der Münzenhandlung Johannes Diller, München. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-78, eighth thaler of 1678, Mainz mint, on his death, without initials. Obverse: capped, quartered arms of Mainz and Worms, crozier and sword crossed behind with palm branches; reverse: eight line inscription, date below. Very rare, cabinet example, superb patina, extremely fine.)"

Damian Hartard von der Leyen (1624-78) was archdeacon of Karden and succeeded Lothar Friedrich von Metternich-Burscheid as archbishop of Mainz and bishop of Worms from 1675 to 1678. Pluralism was common in the seventeenth century. Like many German princes, the archbishop was striking mostly gulden in the 1670's instead of thalers. This denomination was used only for commemoratives. This example realized eight times the catalog value.
