Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion WAG Online 105, Januar 2020, Nr. 1075. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-78, albus of 1678, Mainz mint. Obverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Worms with the escutcheon of Leyen in wreath; reverse: value, date and initials in wreath. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
Damian Hartard von der Leyen (1624-78) was archdeacon of Karden and succeeded Lothar Friedrich von Metternich-Burscheid as archbishop of Mainz and bishop of Worms from 1675 to 1678. Pluralism was common in the seventeenth century. Like many German princes, the archbishop was striking mostly gulden in the 1670's instead of thalers. The albus was two kreuzer, half a batzen or 1/45 thaler. This example realized 4½ times the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1,02 g.
