Künker sale 404, lot 2413

This specimen was lot 2413 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$158 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF KARL HEINRICH, GRAF VON METTERNICH-WINNEBURG, 9. JAN. – 26. SEPT. 1679. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Albus 1679, Mainz. Münzmeister Matthias Fischer. Unter Kurhut die Wappenschilde von Mainz (links), Worms (rechts) und Winneburg/Beilstein mit Mittelschild von Metternich (unten) in Kleeblattstellung//[drei Ringe übereinander] / [drei Ringe übereinander] I [drei Ringe übereinander] / ALBVS / 1679 / MF (ligiert) und Münzzeichen [doppelter Zainhaken], umher Blätterkranz. Sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Charles Henry, count of Metternich-Winneburg, January-September 1679, albus of 1679, Mainz mint. Obverse: capped triple arms of Mainz, Worms and Winneburg/Beilstein with an escutcheon of Metternich; reverse: value and date in leafy wreath. Very fine.)"

Charles Henry was briefly archbishop of Mainz and bishop of Worms. He died before he could be ordained a priest. Despite his short reign, numerous varieties of this denomination exist for 1679.
