Künker sale 386, lot 4748

This specimen was lot 4748 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €650 (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-1678. Gulden (60 Kreuzer) 1675, ICD, Erfurt. Äußerst selten. Sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Damian Hartard von der Leyen, 1675-78, gulden or sixty kreuzer of 1675, Erfurt mint. Very scarce, very fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. After the Thirty Years War, the thaler rose from 72 to ninety kreuzers. Many princes responded in the 1670's by issuing the gulden at its old value of sixty kreuzer or two-thirds of a thaler. The archbishops issued gulden in many styles (KM 121, 123, 136, 137, 138, 139, 140, 141, 163, 179, 201) of which this issue of 1675 is the seventh.
