Mainz 1690-AD 15 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4756 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €95 (about US$123 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. 15 Kreuzer 1690, AD, Mainz. Sehr schön +. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, fifteen kreuzer of 1690. Choice very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck at Mainz in 1690. Fifteen kreuzer was one quarter gulden or one-sixth thaler and was struck in Mainz in 1680 and 1689-91. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 5.63 g.
