Luzern 1796 40 batzen Dav-1775
The first specimen was lot 2823 in Sincona sale 13 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$614 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ, Luzern, 40 Batzen (Neutaler) 1796. Gutes vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, city of Luzern, forty batzen (or new thaler) of 1796. Extremely fine to good extremely fine)."
The second specimen was lot 72436 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[2] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Luzern (Lucerne). 40 Batzen, 1796. PCGS MS-64. A stunning example that is very deeply toned, this near-Gem radiates with tremendous underlying luster and offers alluring eye appeal shimmering throughout." This is one of two thalers listed for this canton in the eighteenth century.
