Luzern 1796 40 kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 33749 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lucerne. Canton 40 Kreuzer 1796 MS64 NGC. Bright silvery gray with plenty of luster and reflective fields. From the Engelen Collection of World Coinage." The second specimen was lot 4332 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$277 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Luzern, Stadt und Kanton, 10 Batzen 1796, Luzern. Dreiblättriger Laubrand. Vorzüglich-FDC. Kleine Kratzer. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, ten batzen of 1796, Luzern mint. About Uncirculated, Small scratches.)"
This is a one year type from a canton that rarely issued this denomination. Forty kreuzer = ten batzen = one frank = ¼ thaler.
