Jean Elsen sale 161, lot 1078

This specimen was lot 1078 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €200 (about US$261 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, HANOVRE, Georg V (1851-1866), AR double Taler (3 1/2 Gulden), 1855 B. (Germany, kingdom of Hannover, George V, 1851-66, silver double thaler of 1855. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type of 1854-55 is common as double thalers go but can still be expensive. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 842,000.

Specification: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, edge lettered "NEC ~ • ~ ASPERA ~ • ~ TERRENT ~ • ~".
