This specimen was lot 29508 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hannover. Georg V gold 2-1/2 Taler 1855-B MS65 Prooflike NGC, Hannover mint. Alluring, with prooflike mint brilliance and bold definition throughout. A flashy example with excellent eye appeal, incredibly scarce in this elite quality." Various types of 2½ thaler pieces were struck most years between 1814 and 1855; the type shown here was issued 1853 and 1855 and is very scarce. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.
