Steve Album sale 51, lot 890

This specimen was lot 890 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "HESSE-CASSEL: Friedrich Wilhelm I, 1847-1866, AR 2 thaler, 1855, C.P. on truncation, some hairlines in the fields, XF, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type was struck 1851 and 1854-55 with or without CP on the truncation. It is fairly scarce, as is most of the coinage of this state, which was annexed by Prussia in 1866.

Recorded mintage: 357,000.

Specifications: 37.12 g, 0.900 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge.
