Künker sale 354, lot 5736

This specimen was lot 5736 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €420 (about US$585 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg III. 1760-1820. 2/3 Taler 1801, Hannover. Mit Signatur H am Halsabschnitt und auf der Rückseite FEIN f. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 27, Osnabrück 1994, Nr. 2932. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, two thirds thaler of 1801, Hannover mint, with initial "H" on the truncation. Very scarce in this quality, choice example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1801-02 for George V, along with similar half thalers (KM 410, KM 411) and single thalers (KM 414). These were the final years for the electorate; Napoleon would award it to Prussia in 1807 and in 1810 partition it between his puppet kingdom of Westphalia and the empire proper. On his fall in 1814, it was returned to George IV reconstituted as the kingdom of Hannover.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 17,17 g.

Catalog reference: KM 412, Welter 2810; Kahnt 193 b; Smith 228.
