Hannover 1730-EPH 2/3 thaler KM-229
This specimen was lot 74553 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1730-EPH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-58. A delightful Wild Man with boldly struck up detail revealing intricacy in the hair and muscles. Brilliant surfaces, while toned pale magenta gray, are fully lustrous and exceptionally eye appealing for the grade. In fact, only the lightest hint of handling across the highest points precludes a Mint State designation. Overall the perfect representative of the popular type for discerning numismatists. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Dr. Busso Peus Machf auction with ticket." This type was struck 1730-43 along with KM 228 (leaping stallion reverse).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
