Groningen-Ommelanden 1691 6 stuivers
This specimen was lot 34023 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Groningen & Ommeland. Provincial Piefort 6 Stuivers 1691 AU58 NGC. A promising Piefort issue and one that's seen at auction once every few years, seemingly seldom-seen in anything considered appreciable. Witnessed at the cusp of a Mint State assignment with ample residual luster and finely rendered motifs, resulting in a fully desirable addition to any specialists cabinet. From the Coenen Collection." This is not the familiar scheepjesschelling of the eighteenth century but a coin closer to the snaphaan struck in Gelderland in the sixteenth century. The nickname snaphaan ("hensnatcher") comes from the kleptomanic tendencies of the mounted knight depicted on the obverse. The schelling or shilling was later worth six stuivers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.95 g, 0.562 fine silver, this specimen 9.37 g.
Catalog reference: KM 37.3 (regular issue); KM-P22 (piefort).
