Groningen-Ommelanden 1692 28 stuivers KM-49
The second specimen was lot 558 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GRONINGEN Stad. 28 stuiver. 1692, Silver Type II. Gekroonde dubbele adelaar met rijksappel op de borst. Kz. gekroond stadswapen, jaartal boven de kroon, waardeaanduiding in cartouche. Met klop A10: G.O in rechthoek Munt: Vrijwel Zeer Fraai. Klop: Zeer Fraai+. (city of Groningen, silver 28 stuivers of 1692, type II. Obverse: crowned doubled headed eagle with imperial orb on its breast; reverse: crowned city arms, date above, value in cartouche, with "G O" counterstamp. Host coin about Very Fine, counterstamp bold very fine.)"
The city struck this denomination in several varieties (KM 49 (shown here), KM 50 (no inner circle), KM 51 (arms/bust)) as well as several piedforts. The counterstamp was applied in the 1690's to deter rampant counterfeiting.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 19.50 g, 0.673 fine silver, this specimen 18.57 g.
