Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 23217

This specimen was lot 23217 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1874. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS EF-45. Die #32. A classic RARITY among Sovereigns specialists with the final date of the shield and die number. Presenting with wholesome wear but retaining a great amount of detail, especially on the reverse. Paired with the old style PCGS holder, this piece is sure to see spirted bidding. From the Augustana Collection." This sovereing was struck 1863-74 with the shield reverse and die numbers. This is a rare date; most 1874's were Fr-388.

Recorded mintage: 521,000 including the St. George and the dragon reverse.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
