Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56148

This specimen was lot 56148 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1873. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-58." This bust was used on the sovereign, or one pound coin, 1838-85 with the St. George reverse introduced in 1871. However, the shield reverse was not terminated until 1874. This date is common. All issues of this date with the shield reverse bear die numbers.

Recorded mintage: 2,368,000 including the shield reverse.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
